In 1961, presenting an exhibition by Aluísio Carvão at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, Mário Pedrosa “warned the rushed, shallow, moody audiences not to label the painter as insensible or incoherent, just because his current paintings do not strictly follow surface-level norms or demonstrate constructive or purely geometric concerns on the foreground". He made this observation based on Max Bill's claim that concrete art can express itself in fully a-geometric or amorphous forms, and added: "Carvão’s art is exactly the same today as it was yesterday, and it will most likely remain the same tomorrow".

And the critic was absolutely right. What he said a quarter of a century ago still holds true for the current standing of Carvão's paintings: it remains the same, and yet, it continues to surprise us for its originality and boldness. In the apparent diffusion of his work over four decades, there is great internal coherence. Although this unity is not always evident, it does exist. However, this does not mean there is a rigid, unyielding agenda either. In fact, aesthetic rigor should not necessarily imply neither in straight lines, nor in imprecision or disorder. At this stage of his career, in which forms seem to blossom like flowers in the morning sun, and colors gain a completely new sense of luminosity and vibration, there is nothing spontaneous or fortuitous. Instead, Carvão's usual rigor remains the same.
